Romans 16 – The NT Hall of Faith PDF Print E-mail
Written by Rick E Blalock

It is said that Hebrews 11 is the “Hall of Faith” but of the Old Testament. Romans 16 is the New Testament Hall of Faith, showcasing many of the Christians who perpetuated the gospel across the world. Notice this is the Hall of Faith in the Gentile world. The names are primarily Greek! Also notice that he is saluting saints in Rome, of which Peter is not named. One would think, as the Catholics believe, that Peter would be mentioned if he was there!

Vs. 1-2: The first saint mentioned is a notable one. Phebe, that great helper in the Lord. The mention of Phebe as the bearer of the Epistle (“I commend unto you, Phebe…”), confirms the supposition that this Epistle was written while Paul was at Corinth. She had an obvious place of authority because of her title given to her by Paul: “Deaconess”. Cf – Titus 2

Vs. 3-4: Priscilla and Aquilla’s handprint was everywhere in the early church. They met Paul and aided him even to the saving of his life. They took Apollos and taught him the Scripture and he later became a pastor (Ac 18.26). Paul states in verse 4, “I give thanks but also all the churches of the Gentiles,” indicating that they had their handprint on the churches all around.

Vs. 5: Epenetus is among the first of many that followed Jesus Christ in Achaia. There is nothing else said about him specifically but cross reference I Co 16.15: “I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)”, Apparently he was a very dedicated follower of Jesus Christ.

Vs. 13: “Rufus, chosen in the Lord.” He was the son of Simon who bore the cross of Jesus (Mk 15.21). To be able to say, “My father bore the cross of Jesus,” would certainly be a great honor!

Vs. 17-18: Take heed of those who cause division, but what kind of division is he talking about? Division from the Word of God. Division from true doctrine.
