II Kings 17.24-41
“So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images.”

A Biblical phenomenon, often dubbed “Syncretism”, is occurring around the world today. Everyone knows examples of it in one form or another: people pretending to be Christian, Catholic religion fused into pagan rituals, secular philosophy into Christian morals, etc. Syncretism, simply put, is the marriage of a personal belief system with the truth, often creating a third religion. It is not a new issue in the world, nor is it a buzz word or fad in mission. It has plagued mankind since Adam and if not addressed will always lead to a horrible misrepresentation of God and His Word. Syncretism silently damns its victims to Hell while giving them assured Salvation. The Bible is plain on Syncretism and every believer must be aware of its passages or will soon find themselves discipling syncretism.

Man always looks for the solution to his quandary (vs. 25-26) and it is therefore not surprising that he is aptly religious. The five pagan nations of (II Ki. 17) were looking for a religious solution to their problem. When the Israeli priest arrived, he taught them exactly as they needed him to: “Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD.” (vs. 27). There is not a carnal human on earth that would have rejected the obvious solution to their problem. But what really was there problem? Was their problem what they thought it was?

“Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.” (vs. 26)

They diagnosed their problem as ritualistic ignorance. Every god on earth is worshipped in the rituals they were accustomed to and so they wanted to do the same for the LORD God. The Israeli priest taught them, “how they should fear the LORD,” and that is exactly what they did:

So they feared the LORD, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.” (II Ki. 17.32-33 – emphasis added)

It was easy for them to fuse their current beliefs with the religious “how to’s” of Judaism. And it is so with everyone else swallowed by Syncretism. Syncretism is not a malpractice problem it is a mal-communication problem. The 5 pagan nations would have done any “how to fear the LORD” method that was shown to them; they would have practiced and observed any action they were told to do. The problem is they were never communicated who is the LORD, else they would have understood they could not serve their gods and the LORD.

It is mal-communication to exclude His character and His law apart from His religious duties. It is mal-communication to let others believe they can say a prayer, attend an assembly, behave a certain way, and be a follower of the LORD. It is syncretism to let others profess Christ and drink the cup of devils (I Co. 10.20-21).

Confronting syncretism must be done in the immediate manner Paul and Barnabas had to confront it (Ac. 14). They did not allow the Lyconians to continue in their misunderstanding of the Gospel; they stopped it immediately. Believers everywhere must confront this problem or be forever doomed to a people who walk, talk, pray, and act like Christians but deep down are the devil's children.

Permitting syncretism is discipling it.
